Whitestone Hill Battlefield State Historic Site

 The battlefield lies just 23 miles south of the town of Kulm. This was the site of the fiercest fight between natives and white soldiers in the whole of the state. Today, two monuments exist on the land – one for the fallen soldiers, and one for all the natives killed in the clash, of which there were men, women, children, and elderly.

 The site is open from May 16 to September 15, and admission is free. However, you may donate at the site to assist in keeping the area nice and clean. It is an interesting site, and you will find plenty of great opportunities for photographs – so don’t forget your camera.

Fort Abercrombie - Abercrombie, North Dakota

 

Fort Abercrombie, known as the Gateway to the Dakotas, is located in the town of Abercrombie and was the first permanent military fort in the United States. This fort helped to guard oxcart trails, stagecoaches, and supply wagons for the military. They even guarded the steamboats that traveled the Red River. For a time, the fort was even a supply base for expeditions that sought gold in North Dakota and Montana.

Heritage Hjemkomst Interpretive Center

 The Heritage Hjemkomst Interpretive Center is a fun and interactive museum to visit, especially if you are intrigued by the Viking Age.

 Housed at this center is a replica Viking ship that was built in 1974 and sailed all the way to Norway in 1982. You can actually touch the ship and see how the crew lived during their voyage.
