Roger Maris Museum - Fargo, North Dakota

Roger Maris Museum.gifRoger Maris Museum - Fargo, North Dakota

If you are a baseball fan you know about the legendary Roger Maris and his sixty-one home runs in 1961. His 61 in ‘61 set a new major league record, breaking Babe Ruth’s previous mark of 60 hit in 1927.  Everyone has heard of Roger Maris, the famous baseball player that played for the New York Yankees. His hometown is Fargo, North Dakota, and that is where the Roger Maris Museum is located. It is in the West Acres Shopping Center at 3902 13th Avenue South in the City of Fargo. Roger Maris was an outfielder who was famous for hitting sixty-one home runs in 1961. That was a new major league record at the time, and it broke the record set by Babe Ruth for 60 home runs in 1927. Roger Maris’ record for home runs stood for thirty-seven years..

In honor of his living in Fargo it seemed appropriate for the museum to be dedicated to him and his baseball career.  Although at first he wasn’t in favor of the museum, he finally said that as long as it was someplace that people could have easy access to see it and that it would have no charge, the museum was built.  Location? Why in the West Acres Shopping Center where nearly 7 million people have the opportunity to view his story.

The museum was recently updated in 2003 with new lighting, ventilation and new glass to display the artifacts more appropriately. The museum includes a video room where you can watch various videos of this famous ball player while sitting on actual seats from Yankee Stadium that were there when Roger Maris was playing. There is a replica of his New York Yankees Stadium monument, and a replica of his 1961 locker.

The museum offers:

  • A video room to watch an expanded collection of videos while sitting on actual Yankee Stadium seats from the Maris era.
  • A replica of Roger’s Yankee Stadium monument.
  • A replica of Roger’s 1961 locker.
  • Displays and artifacts from Roger’s youth and Major League playing days.
  • Artifacts restored from the original museum.

The New York Yankees were fortunate to have this Fargo resident as one of their stars, stop in, visit the museum and relive the excitement of the great years of baseball!
