Whitestone Hill Battlefield State Historic Site – Kulm, North Dakota

Whitestone Hill Battlefield State Historic Site. The battlefield lies just 23 miles south of the town of Kulm. This was the site of the fiercest fight between natives and white soldiers in the whole of the state. Today, two monuments exist on the land – one for the fallen soldiers, and one for all the natives killed in the clash, of which there were men, women, children, and elderly.

The site is open from May 16 to September 15, and admission is free. However, you may donate at the site to assist in keeping the area nice and clean. It is an interesting site, and you will find plenty of great opportunities for photographs – so don’t forget your camera.

When you are traveling across the state and touring the historic sites, you are going to want to find great places to stay, places where you can get good rest and start the next day bright and bushytailed. Finding the best hotels for the best prices doesn’t have to be a chore – just go to hotelscombined.com to see all the great deals you can find.

As a native North Dakotan I obiously take pride in our historic sites, however, I feel that it is imperative that I comment on the Whitestone Battle. The history of military events are generally told from the perspective of the victorious (eg: the survivors), especially if they have better access to the media at the time of the conflict. There is no dispute that it was a bloody day; there is no dispute that the vast majority of the victims were women and children. That was not a battle, it was a slaughter of non-combatants; and to call the Whitestone Battle the bloodiest day of fighting in North Dakota is propoganda that is demeaning to the memory of the victims of the slaughter.
