Fort Abercrombie - Abercrombie, North Dakota

 

Fort Abercrombie, known as the Gateway to the Dakotas, is located in the town of Abercrombie and was the first permanent military fort in North Dakota. This fort helped to guard oxcart trails, stagecoaches, and supply wagons for the military. They even guarded the steamboats that traveled the Red River. For a time, the fort was even a supply base for expeditions that sought gold in North Dakota and Montana.

 The Heritage Hjemkomst Interpretive Center is a fun and interactive museum to visit, especially if you are intrigued by the Viking Age.

 Housed at this center is a replica Viking ship that was built in 1974 and sailed all the way to Norway in 1982. You can actually touch the ship and see how the crew lived during their voyage.
