The Children’s Museum at Yunker Farm is located at 1201 28th Avenue North in Fargo, North Dakota and is housed in the first brick building ever built in the Dakota Territory by Newton Whitman. The house was bought by the Yunker family in 1905.
The Children’s Museum at Yunker Farm was conceived in 1985, and with a lot of community work and generous contributions, it opened to serve the community of Fargo in 1989. This museum is ranked among the top 25 Children’s Museums in the U.S. by Child magazine and is considered one of Fargo’s Favorite Spots to enjoy a family outing. The goals of the Children’s Museum are to provide a safe place for discovery, to instill a desire to learn in children, give them respect for others and for the environment, and present material for them to interact with in a unique way to honor the fact that learning is a life-long process.
The Children’s Museum at Yunker Farm has over fifty hands-on learning exhibits that encourage children to play and learn. Some of the fun exhibits at the museum include the Construction Zone, the Bee Hive, a Toddler Room, a Planetarium, a Lunch Box Café, Tunes for Two complete with a pipe organ, a Puppet Theater, Patty’s Book Nook and many more exhibits to enjoy. The museum also has a store where they sell many fun and amazing items. The Children’s Museum also hosts various activities for families to enjoy throughout the year.
The extensive fifty-five acre grounds of the Children’s Museum include a wide array of activities to enjoy in the outdoors. These activities include a carousel, a miniature train, a pumpkin patch, a playground, a miniature golf course, a Pipi Longstocking house, nature trails, butterfly and alphabet gardens, a football field and tons of wide open space for families to explore and enjoy.
The admission prices for the Children’s Museum are $3 for adults and children. Children under one year of age are admitted free. Members are also admitted free. All children must have an adult with them while they are at the museum. The hours for the museum are seasonal. During the school year, on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, the hours are 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. On Thursday, the Children’s Museum is open from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. On Sunday it is open from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The Children’s Museum is closed on Mondays except when it is a school holiday.
During the summer, the Children’s Museum is open on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. On Thursday, it is open from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and on Sunday, it is open from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Rides on the train are .50, rides on the carousel are .25 and the fee for miniature golf is $3 per person.
