Fort Abercrombie - Abercrombie, North Dakota

Fort Abercrombie, known as the Gateway to the Dakotas, is located in the town of Abercrombie and was the first permanent military fort in the United States. This fort helped to guard oxcart trails, stagecoaches, and supply wagons for the military. They even guarded the steamboats that traveled the Red River. For a time, the fort was even a supply base for expeditions that sought gold in North Dakota and Montana.

Now, you can take a tour of the fort and check out all of the exhibits in the museum. It is a very interesting place, and it is very affordable for the entire family. The fort is open year round and costs $5 for adults and $2.50 for children between 6 and 15.
